Last night Johanna Coulson and I went to Pizza Express in Maidstone to record the VT "On Tour With Th e Soundcasters" we arrived at 6:30pm to set-up and meet the band just to let them know exactly what was going on. The presenter for our VT Jess Coote had already informed us that she wouldn't be arriving until about 8pm which would still give us a chance to record the interview with her in it too. Before 8pm Jess informed us that it would be more like 9-9:30pm that she would be arriving and the band was due on stage at 10pm so I decided that we would record the bands side of the interview and record Jess whenever she arrived (which later became just after 9:30pm).
The record of the interview went well, Tom, Matt and Scott were very talkative and gave great answers, Simon on the other-hand took a while to get going (he seemed shy) but as soon as I asked him a direct question he opened up and had something to say which I plan to use in the VT. For the interview we did have a slight problem with the mic on the canon so all the shots don't have any sound but it was recorded perfect with the boom so all I have to do is sync them in the edit.
Recording the performance for cutaways went well, the producer of Unsigned Live Lauren Woodfall was there with her family having dinner and she was recording the music and the front C/U. I was at the back of the stage getting C/U of Tom, Scott and Simon from behind and getting C/U of Matt and his drumming. Johanna Coulson was on the balcony getting the birds-eye view of the band. We did have a bit of trouble with the lighting and the canons as the lighting was quite dark in the gig hall and the canons had a bit of trouble picking-up clear images but looking back at them now I think they will work. But I have decided that I would not like to use a canon again, I would prefer to stick to using the chunky sony!
When Jess arrived we recorded her intro and outro to the VT and left the questions because the room we were using became too loud and crowded and we thought we could at least try without the questions. We have asked Jess that if we need to record the questions would she be happy to come back and she was absolutely fine with it.
When we recorded the interview I asked the band to look at a tripod that we had situated between our two cameras so that it looked like they were talking to someone (Jess) and they would all have the same eyeline, looking back at the footage now I realize that for the first few answers that they give they are looking at the tripod (but I don't feel the answers are very good) but pretty soon they start looking at me when giving their answers because I'm the one asking the questions. Luckily though they are all looking at me at one point or another so their eyelines are the same.
It's strange because the bits of the C/Us of the interview that I want to use that Johanna recorded Scott is answering the question and he is looking at Johanna. Weird but managable.
