The deadline was today.
Having had a slight hiccup last night when my laptop decided to freeze on me just as I finished the Appendix which meant I lost the entire Appendix I had just done - I was still able to get it all finished printed out, bound and handed in by 1:30 - I'm knackered!

Major Project Unit: Deadline
STRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had to move Macs today and in doing so something disrupted my sound and I had to spend the best part of two hours fixing it!
People had managed to guilt trip me all day over the fact that I hadn't been able to get an empty DVD case to put the episode into so when it said it would take 50 minutes to export I dashed to Morrisons to buy the cheapest DVD I could find to use the packaging. I could back just as the project finished exporting so I had 15 minutes to burn the episode onto the DVD - I did this but just as it got to 5 minutes before deadline all the Macs slowed down.
Luckily I managed to get the DVD finished and boxed dead on 5o'clock but Simon wasn't happy, then again neither was I - but I did make the deadline.
I will now spend the next 4/5 days completing my report and making sure it is finished by Tuesday night so that I can get it bound Wednesday so it can be handed in in the afternoon!

Major Project Unit: Intro/Credits
Today I've been working on my opening titles.
I tried it three different ways this was the first that I made, the one I decided on to use for my episode is similar to this but slightly more animated and longer.

Major Project Unit: Edit Sound
I've finished the sound effects today - I just hope they're all as smooth as the gunshots that Dan put in for me in scene 12.
I've also had to put in a visual clip of the radio playing the inspiring track "Goodbye Earl" so as to not leave a large empty space on screen and to get the audience to focus on the song lyrics.
I did try to animate the radio screen to have it scroll but it never seemed to quite fit so I've just left it as a still.

Major Project Unit: Edit Sound
I've been working on my sound effects today, I've been downloading the sounds I need off of Free sound.org - great website and easy to use!
At one point today Dan Baugh drifted by and I was able to nab him so that he could work his magic and put in some proper visual gunshots to help make scene 12 more realistic. He said it would take 10 minutes (it was more like 25) but he did it and it works perfectly, Dan Baugh is magnificent!
I just have a few sounds to add on tomorrow and then I can focus on the credits.

Major Project Unit: Edit
Simon said he liked scene 12 when Kira and Gertie are considering the different ways they could kill-off Michael and he said he wanted me to try to get that same type of humour to appear earlier in episode as well.
So I have spent the whole week working on Simons idea of what should go and what can stay, I have been trying to tighten each clip/line up so that it sounds more like a normal conversation rather than one had between cyborgs. I think I'm there, all I have to do his work on the graphics, sound and credits - which I will do next week.

Major Project Unit: Edit
The first version of the edit is finished and I'm just waiting to show Simon the second half so that he can give his input on the whole piece. I have a vague idea of what I feel works now and and what I could do with losing but I would still like Simon to have a look.

Major Project Unit: Edit
UNFORTUNATELY, I have been ill for the past few days and have been unable to get to the studios, let alone out of bed to start the edit. But I'm feeling a bit better now and have started putting the clips into an order so as to have a rough idea of what works now and what doesn't, I hope to have this first edit finished by Friday afternoon.

Major Project Unit: Production Day Six
This morning we shot the exterior scenes at my house and then we went off to the local trout far so that we could pretend to dumped the body of Michael Earl for scene 16.
This afternoon we were filming at the Village Hall (these were the best scenes to shoot as it was just myslef and Maddie finding many ways in which to "kill" the character Michael.
We have been covered in fake blood from head to toe!
Right now I'm hoping the upload of the footage will finish soon so that I can get all the camera and lighting equipment to Dan Baughs house so that he can use it for his project next week, and so that I can quickly get home to wash-off the fake blood.

Major Project Unit: Production Day Five
We shot the interior scenes today at my house.
It went off to a bad start today due to the actress and camera op' getting lost en route but once we got going we manged to get it finished before 5:30.
We all have tomorrow off so that we can be properly rested for the full days shoot on Friday 16th - luckily this will/should be the final day of shooting.

Major Project Unit: Production Day Four
Today we finished filming at Jane's, shooting scenes 6 and 11. It has been a long day but the footage has been uploaded and it all seems fine.
Monday, 12 November 2012
Major Project Unit: Production Day Three
Today we only managed to film scene 13 due to Maddie having to work elsewhere which is fine - we're due back at Jane's tomorrow to finish up the scenes there.

Major Project Unit: A quick break
Both myself and my camera op' are off to Amsterdam tonight for a couple of days and shall return bleery-eyed on Sunday night to continue filming on the Monday.
WBL Unit: Finished
The adverts have been uploaded to YouTube, David has viewed them and has asked if I'm willing to finish off editing for them to be used on the NewnhamCourt Shopping Village which I have agreed to do. I will finish what I started in my own time.
The hand-in has been done.
This unit is finished.

Major Project Unit: Production Day Two
We were filming today in Lenham Square and graveyard doing scenes 4 and 5. Luckily the weather was lovely today - hardly a cloud in the sky. I've uploaded the footage and now I will continue working on my WBL report.
WBL Unit: Complications
David hasn’t
yet received my disc so I’m going to have to upload the adverts to YouTube for
him to view.

Major Project Unit: Production Day One
I did some filming with Johanna Coulson (my main Camera Operative for this project) on Friday 2nd November but having uploaded them this morning I can see the images are just too dark to have any successful colour corrector done to them so I will reshoot those scenes with Aly Trowbridge my PA/sister next week - I spoke with Simon and he managed to work-out what was wrong and fix the problem too.
We started filming properly today at 1 o'clock at Jane's house doing scenes 7, 8, 9 + 10.
It went well today and I have just finished uploading the clips and they are a lot better than the ones shot on Friday.

Major Project Unit: Actors
I've finally got actors for my project.
From the start I've always said I would be playing the character of Kira.
Maddie Ireland has stepped forward and has offered to take the role of Gertie as no-one else has contacted me.
Adam Miller (a boy I knew from school) has taken the role of Michael.
(Thank god!)
Filming is set to start on Monday 5th November.

I uploaded
the adverts to a disc and posted them to David Saunderson today, the people at
the post-office said that it should arrive on Saturday or Monday so that David
can send me some feedback to put into my report.

Major Project Unit: Filming location
Whilst working on my WBL for the past few weeks I have also been looking for large empty rooms I could film in for one scene of my major project. A couple of days ago I had a light-bulb moment when I realized I might be able to use my local Village Hall.
I emailed the committee in-charge of the Village Hall hiring - they've just got back to me and I have been given the hall between 2:30 and 5:30 on Friday 16th November for filming.
There is a hire fee of £30 which I will give to the committee leader tomorrow.
I've also got the other locations sorted, I will be filming at my own home, Jane Lowe's house and in the village square and grraveyard at Lenham, just outside Maidstone along the A20.

Major Project Unit: After Effects
Today was our fifth and final workshop in using After Effects, after what we have achieved in the past week I am now more confident in making my own credits/intro for my major project than I was before.
These workshops have been very insightful.
These workshops have been very insightful.
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I’ve applied
the voice-over and exported the adverts so that I can check that nothing is
wrong but I send them off to David Saunderson tomorrow.
I’ve looked
at e-mailing them to David but anything bigger than 100MB would have to be paid
for to send and given that each of the adverts are over 200MB e-mail is out of
the question.

WBL Unit: Post-Production
I watched
the adverts last night and found that a couple of the clips that I repeat in
each advert have gone fuzzy so I had to re-edit the adverts to fix the problem.
The
scripting sounds fine and seems to fit the adverts well so I will record the
voice-over tonight and apply it to the adverts tomorrow.
Monday, 29 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I finished
off the soundtrack to each of the adverts and attached them. I have exported
them and will view them to see if the scripting for the voice-over fits.
Friday, 26 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I finished
the Home Improvement advert today, getting the video and audio transitions in
the right place.
I also made
a start on the soundtrack for the adverts in GarageBand. I want all six adverts
to have the same soundtrack so that it is obvious they are one
collection/series of adverts.
Tonight I am
hoping to make a start on the scripting for the adverts.
I will also
contact David Saunderson and let him know I will not be able to make all six
adverts by the project deadline but I will carry-on making them after my
deadline.

WBL Unit: Post-Production
We had
another workshop/lecture on After Effects this morning but I did manage to
finish-off putting the clips into an order I feel suits the advert.
We have
another workshop/lecture on After Effects tomorrow afternoon and I have props
to buy for my Major Project so I won’t get any editing done, fingers-crossed I
will finish editing this advert on Friday.

We had a
workshop/lecture on using After Effects for our Major Projects this morning so
I haven’t had much of a chance to edit but I did make a good start with the
time I had on the Home Improvement advert. I am part way through placing the
clips and should finish that off tomorrow.

Major Project Unit: Audition
I have just auditioned my first (and only - so far) actor for the role of Michael. The young James Anderson.
It was a good audition, he seemed very focused and open to different ideas and opinions but I do feel that he is a little too young for this role.
Michael is ment to be older and wiser and I'm afraid to say that James Anderson seemed to "baby-faced" for the role.
But he definitely was successful at portraying a dark character.

WBL Unit: Post-Production
I finished editing
the Health and Beauty advert today apply a lot of SmootheCam to the clips. I
had to do a majority of the recording in Pure as handheld because the rooms
were too small to have two employees, two customers, myself and a camera on a
tripod so a few of the clips are a bit bumpy. All the video and audio
transitions have been done so I can make a start on the Home Improvement advert
tomorrow.
Friday, 19 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
Due to a
green screen workshop on Wednesday and group crit’ on Thursday I was unable to
do much editing but I made a better start on the Health and Beauty advert
today. There was one clip in this advert I had to spend extra time on editing
due to the fact all the others are quite bright, whereas this clip was shot
outside on a day when the heavens seemed determined to open and made the clip
quite dark. Plus I had to reverse the speed due to the order I wanted to show
the clips and I had apply SmootheCam. Sometimes rendering takes far too long.

Major Project Unit: Actors
So far I have sent out request for actors to several different Am' Dram' societies in and around Maidstone, and only today have I heard back from one actor. We have been communicating today and he is set to audition on Monday 22nd October at the studios, fingers-crossed this is the first of many.

WBL Unit: Post-Production
Due to work
on our Major Project yesterday with Kim Brooke I was unable to do any editing
so today I finished off the transitions for the Pets advert. I did try to make
a start on the Health and Beauty advert but I didn’t get too far.
Friday, 12 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I started
editing the Pets advert today, finding the right clip and colour correcting as
I go long do to some of the clips being brighter than the others.
I will keep
the same format of video transitions so that the adverts look as if they come
as a package.
I will
finish-off the transitions for this advert next week.
Thursday, 11 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I continued
editing the Gardening advert and I now have all the clips in the order I think
best suits this type of advert.
I was working
on the video transitions and cross fading the sound to make sure it didn’t jump
or overlay one another.
I was also
looking at the best way to finish the advert and what details should be put at
the end so that the potential customers viewing the ad will come to Newnham
Court.
Wednesday, 10 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I started
editing today.
The advert I
made a start on was the one for Gardening. I’m going to use the same shots for
the start and end of all six adverts.
This is
going to take a little longer than I first thought given the amount of footage
I have to go through to find the right clips to use.
Some of the
clips will need colour correcting due to the fact that the weather was against
me and was overcast when I was filming.
Tuesday, 9 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I’ve been
ill for the past couple of days so have not yet been able to start editing the
Newnham Court adverts.
Friday, 5 October 2012
WBL Unit: Post-Production
I spoke to
David and he agrees with me that six are better than one. I labelled/named the
clips today and put them into seven different folders, one for each advert and
an intro folder.
The folders
I created are Pets, Clothes, Home Improvement, Health and Beauty, Gardening and
Gifts. I will start editing next week.
WBL Unit: Previous ads
I've had a look online and all I can find is this advert done for Easter, it seems very old, cheesy and short. I do not want my advert to be like that.

I’ve been
looking at the amount of footage I have for the advert and I think it would be
a good idea to make six short adverts rather than one long one. I will run this
past David Saunderson.

WBL Unit: Production Day 4
I had to wait for a camera today so I didn't get to start when I needed to, I've been waiting for some rain-free weather to film outside and it was sunny this morning but by the time I got my camera the sun had gone in and it kept threatening to rain. I did manage to finish filming though and the rain stayed away.
I started filming at Charterwood Mobility and NCSV Shopmobility and it wasn't until I got halfway through the record that I realized the image on the small screen had slight white showing where there was a change in light. I spent the rest of the day worrying that when transferred to computer the images would still show the white instead of light. Because Charterwood is at the back of the shopping village not many people visit it so whilst I was recording there weren't any customers. This is a shame because it's a large shop and my shots would look better with people in them but that is also the reason why I am doing this advert - so that people know that this place exists and where it is.
Whilst the rain was deciding to fall or not I went and recorded in Notcutts Garden Centre so I got all the exterior shots I felt I needed. Luckily, there were also a few customers perusing the plants so I had a couple of shots with potential customers.
FineLine Windows Doors & Conservatories is mainly based outdoors and is situated next to the Garden Centre so that is where I went next. Once again nobody was around so the shots are clear.
Behind FineLine - Johnsons Garden Buildings is located. There was a couple being shown but they didn't want to be part of the advert so whilst they were looking at the interiors of the cabins I was outside recording exteriors and then we swapped so that I could show the different sizes and the different uses such as a playhouse for kids or a place to put your Jacuzzi.
Granite Transformations was up next, it is quite a small area as a shop so there wasn't much in the way of products to record.
For the past week I've been trying to record at Noble House Chinese Restaurant but every time I'd get there they would be closed and nobody around. Today I got there just before they opened so I could do some shots of the interior - no customers but what's new.
To finish it all off I did a couple of shots of the car park and an establishing shot of Newnham Court which I couldn't do from within the Shopping Village, this meant I had to pull over into someones drive-way just off of the motorway stand at the top of a small incline. The owners thought my car had broken-down - the lengths I go to for a decent shot.
Because it was very late in the day when I finished I went home and will upload the last bits of footage tomorrow.

WBL Unit: Production Day 3
I got into the studios early to upload the footage and to make sure the batteries were fully charged. Then I was off again to Newnham Court to do some exterior stores that are not part of the main centre.
I started at Model World, which was good for customers as this more of a hands-on store compared to some of the others. One of the employees requested not to be filmed when he was behind a certain desk as he was not doing work he was being paid for there, but when he was serving customers I could film to my hearts content.
Filming at Bricks Coffee House wasn't easy for two reasons, the first being that the amount of tables meant it was difficult for me to set-up the camera tripod, the second being the fact two women in the centre of the Coffee House didn't want to be on film but didn't necessarily want to move either.
The next place to film was Pure Hairdressing which is by-far the best place so far. They only had two customers there when I arrived, one didn't want to be recorded because she felt she looked awful due to the dye still being on her hair and the other was one of the employees. Whilst I was setting-up the camera the girls working there snapped straight into action without any prompting. First they moved the lady with the hair dye to the corner chair and put the large dryer around her so she could not be seen. Then two of them took to the seats whilst they had their colleagues pretend to "work" on their hair. Clearly they want to appear busy and popular for the advert which was perfectly fine by me (but I feel they have done this before).
When I went next door to Pure Beauty Essentials there weren't any customers but people were due to arrive fifteen minutes later so I disappeared to Cotswold Outdoor where once again customers were ducking the camera so as to not get in my way. It is surprising the amount of things you're meant to take with you when you are hiking or camping.
Back at Pure Beauty Essentials two customers had arrived, one having a manicure and the other having a pedicure. The one having a manicure didn't want her face in the advert but filming her hands were fine. The lady having the pedicure was very happy to be in the advert, feet are just feet.
On my way back to Pure Beauty Essentials from Cotswold Outdoors the skies opened and I got drenched so when I finished I didn't go back to the studios to upload the footage, I went straight home to drip dry.

WBL Unit: Production Day 2
Today the production continued at Newnham Court, the memory card was formatted and the batteries were fully charged which made it easier for me.
Today I was filming the main interior of Notcutts from the seeds and gardening tools in the greenhouse to the kids toys and wine near the check-outs.
I also shot in the Coffee Corner Restaurant (finally customers to record).
When I got to Edinburgh Woollen Mill I had to sign-in on their visitors sheet, I've had a bit of difficulty getting permission to film here, this is due to the fact that the company just rent the property, Edinburgh Woollen Mill is a successful without my help in advertisement, but as long as the health and safety was sorted and I signed the sheet they were more than willing for me to film.
Filming in Nauticalia was simple, the woman behind the counter was very helpful and like a few other employees of Newnham Court was curious about what I was doing.
I didn't think I'd have much memory space left but luckily I had a little bit which meant I was able to shoot in Hammonds Furniture, not great on lighting but very spacious.
It got too late to go back to the studios to upload the footage so I will do that before I go back to Newnham Court to finish filming for the week.

WBL Unit: Production
The filming at Newnham court started today, due to weather and the fact that the person who previously had the camera had not recharged either of the batteries I was unable to film that many shops. I managed to get round to Sweatshop Sport Shop, Invicta Craft Centre, Ark Pets and Aquatics, Cotton Traders and The Emporium. The staff in each of the shops were very cooperative.
In Sweatshop Sports Shop it was difficult to begin with due to the fact that I'm small and their main displays are taller than me. I ended up standing on the seating so that I could get a decent shot.
In Ark Pets and Aquatics the girl working there opened up the rabbit cage so I could get a better shot. She was also very curious about what I was doing and why I was doing it. The problem I thought I was going to have was lighting in the Aquatics room. Fortunately, the tanks were giving off enough light that there was nothing to worry about.
In Cotton Traders there was an awful lot of stock that was on sale, so what I could shot was the bare minimum, I did surprisingly get a few decent shots.
When shooting in The Emporium there weren't any customers which makes it difficult for me to make it look popular. I've done an awful lot of close-ups on products to hide that fact.
The only problem I seem to have is that the customers seem to duck when they see a camera, with most of them it's not because they don't want to be filmed but because they think they're getting in the way of my shot. I've been getting bored of having to keep saying "It's okay, you can walk through".
I've uploaded the footage onto Final Cut and I'm making sure the batteries are fully charged so I can start afresh tomorrow.

I've been round to the shops that I listed on the site of Newnham Court, they have all confirmed that it is okay for me to be filming their establishments. I've also taken a few photos to give me some ideas for the storyboards.

Work Based Learning Unit: Finding work
To find four weeks worth (150hrs) of work experience for this unit has been extremely challenging. Everytime I thought I had found something it turned out that they would prefer someone with proper experience rather than a student. In the end I contacted a family friend, Michael Ryan, who is high-up in the production company Handmade Films (Life Of Brian, The Long Good Friday and Time Bandits). Unfortunately, he was in Greece during the summer and has been back and forth to Paris in the past couple of weeks so communicating with him has been difficult. He did manage to give me details for another production company called Midsummer Films and had informed them that I was looking for working experience and given that they are working on the film Tomb of the Dragon it was work worth experiencing. On Monday 17th September I went up to Camden Town to their base but due to the fact that they are coming to the end of the post-production they would be stretched to find me work to experience. Luckily, on the same day a phone call with Newnham Court Shopping Village turned out a better result.
I researched the website for Newnham Court and found that they didn't have an advert on the website to highlight the many different shops that are in the Village. I contacted David Saunderson through the DSH public relations and he was enthusiastic with the idea of an advert to put on the website. I suggested to him that there are two possibilities; 1 being an advert for Newnham Court in its entirety (showing everything it has to offer, and the 2nd being collective adverts for each shop - this has been left to me to decide (once I have the footage) what would look best.

Worked Base Learning Unit: Possible work experience
I have possibly got some work experience with a production company called Midsummer Films up in Camden Town. I'm on my way up there today to see if it's any good. They're not sure if they have any work for me but I won't know if I don't try.

Major Project Unit: the inspiration
I've been a long-time fan of country music, with its upbeat music and quirky plot lines. Goodbye Earl has always been a song that I've found has both a fun and serious side to it. This is the original video by the Dixie Chicks...

Major Project Unit: Character profile
To save face on this project the characters names will have to change from the ones used in the song "Goodbye Earl" especially when the song is written for Country and Western and I'll be filming in the Kent countryside. So, Mary Anne becomes Kira, Wanda becomes Gertie and Earl becomes Michael.
Character Profiles:
Kira (a.k.a. Fizzgig) - Independent, adventurous, optimistic, loyal, resourceful and bubbly. She is determined to live life to the full. Good for a laugh and loves getting attention. She knows everyone. Her best-friend is Gertie who she has known since starting secondary school. Still doesn't know what to do as career but has brains for anything.
Gertie (a.k.a. Elliott) - Quiet, loyal, pessimistic, attractive, clever, does try to see the best in everybody. Feels she can loosen-up around Kira and only Kira. Librarian. Moved into the countryside with parents when she was 11. She loves her husband because he does "what's right for her"! Wishes she was as brave and independent as Kira.
Michael - Average height, average weight - plain (just average). Short temper, controlling, yet quiet in public so as to not draw attention to himself. Appears to not have many friends. Self-employed plumber. Favourite hobbies are drinking and wife-beating. He moves around a lot.

I looked into the many different genres of online british programmes so that I could see whether or not there is a need for my online programme.
As you can see, there are many comedy programmes available online, but in comparison there are very few dramas/comedy drama which is what my programmes genre is.
